To locate the Print & Fax, Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners and add your Brother machine as a printer, follow the instructions below:
NOTE: The screens may differ depending on operating system being used and your Brother machine.

  1. Turn your Brother machine’s power off and unplug the machine from the power outlet. If an interface cable is connected, unplug it too.
  2. Choose your connection type.
    For USB Users:
  3. Plug the Brother machine to the power outlet and turn the machine power on.
  4. Connect the Brother machine to the PC by the USB cable.
  5. Do not connect the product to a USB port on a keyboard or a non powered USB hub.
  6. Connect the network cable to the Brother machine and the hub.
  7. Plug the Brother machine to the power outlet and turn the machine power on.
  8. For Wireless Network Users:
  9. Plug the Brother machine to the power outlet and turn the machine power on.
  10. Then you will need to setup your machine on the network. For more information on how to setup the machine on the network, please refer to the Quick Setup Guide or Network User’s Guide for your machine. The latest Quick Setup Guide or Network User’s Guide is available in the Manuals section.
  11. Click on the Apple Menu and choose System Preferences.
  12. Click on the Print & Fax, Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners icon.
  13. Click on + button.
  14. Click on Default. Choose your Brother machine from Printer Name list.
    Confirm that the correct machine is listed for Print Using or Use. And click on Add button.
    For the CUPS Driver:
    Make sure that XXXXXXX + CUPS is listed for Print Using or Use. (Where XXXXXXX is the printer model name.)
    For PostScript Driver (not available for all models):
    Make sure that XXXXXXX BR-Script or XXXXXXX PS is listed for Print Using or Use. (Where XXXXXXX is the printer model name.)
  15. For AirPrint compatible models:
    If the AirPrint driver is selected, then you will not have the full functionality of the printer driver. Instead, we recommend that you choose the CUPS Driver, as detailed above, for the most complete functionality.
  16. The machine is added to the Print & Fax, Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners. Close the System Preferences.

Jan 18, 2016 Lots of new printers are OS X 10.6.8 supported, but you mat just need to do a bit of checking which is easy and quick enough to do. I.e.: we just replaced out old HP AIO that just up and died a month or so ago, and got a Canon MG5620 AIO that was released late 2014, and it works well with our OS X 10.6.8 iMac (and 10.9.5 iMac), even with.
